Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
