Utah Prosecutors Charge Suspect in Activist Killing with Aggravated Murder

State prosecutors on this week filed charges against Tyler Robinson, the young adult alleged of killing far-right figure Charlie Kirk, with first-degree homicide—and announced they will pursue the capital punishment if he is convicted.

Charges and Case Circumstances

Specific accusations brought include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and witness tampering. County Attorney Jeff Gray explained that factors elevating the charge involved the victim’s public statements and the presence of children during the incident.

“I do not take this decision lightly,” the prosecutor said. “This determination was reached based solely on the available evidence.”

Case Details and Reported Motive

Investigators allege that Robinson instructed his roommate to erase damaging text messages and remain silent to police. Based on information, Robinson’s mother told investigators that her son had become more political and had started leaning to the left, including advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.

The suspect was reportedly dating his housemate, who was transitioning genders.

Scene of the Killing

Kirk was fatally wounded at an event at UVU moments following a remark about trans people and mass shootings. Video of the incident showed the shooting.

Apprehension and Proof

The accused was arrested the following day after people close to him recognized him from suspect photos. He surrendered with the help of a associate who was a law enforcement official.

Prior to his surrender, Robinson reportedly admitted to the shooting in a post on the chat platform, writing: “Everyone, it’s unfortunate, I was responsible at UVU that day.”

Authorities also reported that DNA linked to Robinson was found on a towel placed on the rifle believed to have been used in the attack. The gun was abandoned near the campus.

Communications and Marked Bullets

Additional evidence included a text message from Robinson to his roommate that read: “I had the chance to take out Charlie Kirk, and I will to do it.”

Authorities also found cartridges with engraved messages such as internet memes, gaming references, and lyrics from an anti-fascist song. A particular inscription read: “Hey fascist! CATCH!”

Legal Proceedings and Custody

The defendant will stay in custody without bail due to the state’s intent to pursue the capital sentence. He was set to appear in before a judge for an first appearance.

Gray described the homicide as “an American tragedy,” adding that Kirk was killed while exercising First Amendment rights.
