Proof presented from Utah lawyers on Tuesday illuminated what authorities suspect motivated Tyler Robinson to allegedly murder far-right commentator Charlie Kirk.
In text messages quoted by prosecutors, Robinson is described saying to his partner—referred to as undergoing a gender transition—that he had enough of Kirk’s “hatred”.
“Some hate cannot be resolved through discussion,” the suspect reportedly said.
Prosecutors claim that Robinson’s mother informed authorities her son had recently become “more political” and had begun shifting toward progressive views, supporting LGBTQ+ rights.
His new outlook allegedly led to disagreements with relatives, especially with Robinson and his father, who maintained very different political views.
Prior media reporting indicated that Robinson’s parents were active GOP voters who supported Donald Trump in 2024.
Prosecutors cited a message in which Robinson described his father as “pretty diehard maga”.
According to prosecutors, Robinson mentioned Kirk’s appearance at Utah Valley University, calling it a “stupid venue”.
His mother informed investigators that Robinson had accused Kirk of “spreading hate”.
Following the shooting, Robinson’s parents allegedly identified their son in a security image released in the news.
The suspect’s dad, a licensed hunter, feared the rifle used in the killing matched one he had gifted to his son.
In a conversation with his father, Tyler Robinson allegedly confessed to the murder, stating there was “too much evil” and that Kirk “spreads too much hate”.
Robinson subsequently turned himself in to police with the help of a family friend who was a local law enforcement official.
Prosecutors cited genetic material recovered on the firearm discarded near UVU, as well as texts to his partner, as key proof linking Robinson to the shooting.
Markings on shells discovered near the location included phrases such as “anti-fascist slogans” and “O bella ciao”.
However Robinson allegedly downplayed these engravings in a message as “fuckin … mostly a big meme”.
Among the texts, the partner questioned Robinson, “It wasn’t you, was it?”
The suspect—called his roommate his “love”—reportedly responded, “Yes, and I apologize.”
Additionally, he expressed regret for “dragging into” the partner and wrote that he had hoped to hide the secret until he died of old age.
Robinson is charged with capital murder, and prosecutors stated they will pursue the death penalty if he is found guilty.
One aggravating factor mentioned was that Robinson targeted Kirk based on his beliefs and speech.
Jeff Gray, chief state prosecutor in the county, emphasized that the choice to seek the death penalty was made independently and guided only by the evidence and nature of the offense.
