FBI Director Kash Patel was seen before the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday sporting a necktie featuring the logo of EPL team Liverpool.
His accessory selection drew questions on social media. For one thing, it is highly unusual for a government official to sport a tie with the logo of a business or athletic club. For another, Patel has not publicly expressed support for Liverpool previously—that is not verbally.
That said, he has been photographed sporting Liverpool ties on no fewer than two separate occasions. The first was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting congressional members on Capitol Hill following Donald Trump’s electoral win. Back then, he was rumored to be joining the government. Another instance occurred roughly five months after, on 9 April 2025, at a press event highlighting the capture of narcotics suspects by US authorities.
Interestingly, the tie worn on Tuesday was distinct from the previous one. Previous version had broad lines and a discrete logo, while the newer tie featured thinner stripes and a more prominent logo—identified as the “heritage tie”.
His apparent owns multiple Liverpool ties suggests that his selection is deliberate.
At Tuesday’s session, the atmosphere became heated on several occasions. Patel had a shouting match with US lawmakers Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He stood by his management of the FBI, his dismissal of veteran staff involved in investigations concerning the Capitol attacks, and a tweet in which he announced that a suspect was in detention for the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved premature.
“I don’t see it as a mistake,” Patel told the committee. “I see it as cooperating with the people to confirm that there was a subject in custody.”
Should Patel actually support Liverpool, it would symbolize a stark clash of political allegiances. As one of the nation's top law enforcement officials, Patel has been a visible representative of a Trump’s renewed presidency that has used heavy-handed tactics to impact various areas of society.
These involve operations by ICE in public places that have resulted in the detention of many of foreign nationals regardless of their residency or nationality. It also includes the dispatching of federal agents to left-leaning US cities in due to alleged higher crime rates—assertions that have been disproven.
Liverpool, by contrast, is known to be among the more left-leaning clubs in Europe, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.
Legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once stated: “I am convinced the only way to live and to be truly successful is by teamwork, with everyone working for each other, everyone assisting each other, and everyone having a portion of the benefits at the end of the day.”
Although the operations of Liverpool have changed in recent times, elements of socialist ideology remain. Former manager Jürgen Klopp, who led the club to great success from 2015 to 2024, described his own politics by remarking: “If I am doing well, I want others to do well, too. If there’s something I will never do in my life is vote for the right.”
The club’s supporters also have a significant history of distrust toward law enforcement. A lot of this originates in the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, which killed 97 Liverpool fans. At first, police accused the supporters of hooliganism and intoxication. Years later, independent inquiries revealed that the crowd crush was due to gross negligence by police, who had misled the people to shift blame.
Patel rose to prominence after the incidents of 6 January 2021, when he supported a legal defense fund for those arrested in connection with the Capitol attack. A career prosecutor and advisor to conservative figures, Patel leveraged his ties with the first Trump administration to develop business ventures and a media career. In both capacities, he promoted multiple conspiracy theories, including debunked allegations of election fraud and misleading statements about Covid-19 vaccines.
