For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison forged from the memories of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
