Relatives of African American College Student Discovered Suspended from Campus Tree Retain Civil Rights Attorney

The family of a African American young man located hanging from a large tree on a college campus in Mississippi has brought on well-known civil rights attorney attorney Ben Crump as questions persist regarding the tragic demise.

Initial Findings and Continuing Examination

Recently, personnel at a Mississippi university found the remains of a student named Trey Reed near university pickleball courts. Campus police chief the chief stated that the student appeared to have died by suicide and that there were no evidence of criminal activity, but concerns have escalated among the family.

As authorities and the state agencies look into the death, attorneys assisting the family are conducting their own inquiry and intend to request an independent autopsy.

“Demartravion was a individual full of promise and kindness, deeply loved and respected by all who knew him. His loved ones and the university merit a thorough, external review to reveal the reality about what happened.”

Calls for National Action

Meanwhile, a congressman, a local politician, urged the federal authorities to look into the matter.

“The FBI has the tools and experience needed to conduct a comprehensive, impartial examination, and this is urgent,” the official commented in a statement.

The FBI mentioned that it is following the situation and “prepared to investigate” if there is reason of a possible federal violation.

Past Background

The campus in the area, close to the Arkansas border, is located only about 30 miles from a site closely associated with the notorious killing of a young Black youth. A marker at the Tallahatchie River landing marks the recovery decades past of the victim’s mutilated body in the waterway.

The student’s case rapidly attracted concern online, and brought to mind the period of segregation of racial terror and the deadly assaults of Black people at the hands of perpetrators in the state and in the US south.

Official Findings and Community Reaction

The county coroner disputed rumors that Trey was found with fractures. In a release mentioned by reporters, the official stated that his team conducted a preliminary examination and found the individual did not suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, or trauma suggesting an attack.

An advocacy group said in a message: “While initial reports showed no evidence of external involvement, we understand our skepticism considering rising racially motivated violence directed toward our population throughout this nation.”

“As we expect more detailed autopsy reports and data, we offer this past experience with a level of certainty: Our community have not historically taken our own lives from wooded areas.”

University Actions

In a message posted on the university’s Facebook page, the school leader said that the school was resuming operations while continuing to mourn the tragedy. He said that university representatives were communicating with the loved ones.

“We understand that we can not fully fix this loss. We are assisting with authorities. We are verifying that all the facts required is shared to authorities. And we are praying for resolution.”

Academic activities were halted on the day of the incident at the university, as were events to observe the 100-year milestone of its opening.
