Offspring of Previous South African Leader Jacob G Zuma Denies Terror-Related Accusations as Court Case Starts

The child of ex- South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked charges at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban city.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over comments she posted on digital networks several years back during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that came after the detention of her father.

A seven-day period of anarchy in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including theft and intentional burning, caused at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).

Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of fuelling this turmoil and confronts allegations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Background of the Legal Matter

The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the former president's apprehension for disobeying a court order to appear as a witness at an investigation into claims of impropriety while he was in power.

She has always refuted the allegations against her, with her legal representative earlier describing the government's case as insufficient.

She has also frequently said the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her father after he started his own political organization and campaigned against the ANC.

Backing and Court Representation

This was supported by the foundation, which stated the case was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and kinship harassment" against the former president and his family.

A handful of backers from her political organization, the political party, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other organization officials attended the hearings inside.

Her legal team has argued that the proof presented by the state is unconvincing and lacks substantial proof for a criminal finding.
