FBI Director Patel delivered defiant testimony in front of the Congressional panel on this week, amid growing examination of his management of the probe into the assassination of conservative youth leader Kirk in the state of Utah.
Patel's appearance on Capitol Hill occurred while Democrats and other opponents have criticised the way he and the Bureau have managed the investigation into Kirk's killing—especially an misleading online statement that a suspect had been arrested. Officials later clarified that individuals had been interviewed and let go.
Prior to the hearing, the director took the unusual step of on two occasions going on a news network, justifying his handling of the investigation and revealing surprising information that he claims the FBI has discovered.
Before the panel, he argued that the individual in the Kirk killing was taken into custody just a short time after the Bureau released new photos and footage.
Committee members on the panel sought to paint a picture of disorder and incompetence at the Bureau, citing the agency's handling of the assassination and former agents claiming they were dismissed for partisan motives.
However Patel showed no signs of retreating, ending his introductory statement with the words “I’m ready” and speaking over Democrats on the committee.
During a particularly fiery exchange, Patel called one senator a “political buffoon” as the lawmaker pressed him about Jeffrey Epstein.
While he did not disclose specific operational plans, the director hinted at the next American urban areas that could face a increase in federal resources or military presence to fight crime.
Answering a question by a Republican lawmaker, he named a series of American cities that might be targeted.
“We did it in Washington. Operations are underway in Tennessee. Next will be to Illinois, Miami, St Louis—numerous other cities across the nation,” he stated.
“I'm not intimidated of you!” — Kash Patel in a heated confrontation.
Legal experts have challenged the legality of using military personnel in US cities, and a federal judge in California previously ruled that a comparable deployment in LA was illegal.
