International Bodies and the UK Condemn ‘Monumental Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Imprisonment.

The court decision of pro-democracy activist and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Advocacy bodies and international powers have called the security-related charges driven by politics.

Widespread Disapproval and Appeals for Liberation

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper remarked that the 20-year term is effectively a de facto life term for the elderly man. She described the trial as being driven by political motives via a statute designed to silence Beijing's detractors. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and allow his return to his family.

“This outcome illustrates how the vague and overly broad stipulations of Hong Kong’s national security legislation are subject to interpretation in violation of global human rights commitments,” remarked UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, said the bloc “deplores” the result of the lengthy trial and called for his prompt and absolute freedom.

Details of the Legal Proceedings

Jimmy Lai, the creator behind the now-shuttered activist publication, was detained following the enactment of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing in the wake of extended demonstrations backed by Lai's media outlet.

He was found guilty on charges including plotting to create inflammatory publications and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The second set of accusations were pursuant to the national security statute.

A Son’s Anguish

Lai’s son, Sebastien, shared that his father fears dying alone separated from his loved ones. The legal team has called him the “globally most notable detainee” behind bars at present.

Sebastien Lai noted that while the verdict was anticipated, its reality was harsher than imagined, though it brought some “relief” that the court process had concluded.

Political Repercussions

The verdict has cast a shadow over the bilateral relationship. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly raised Lai’s case in a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping in January. However, visible progress towards his release is uncertain.

Sebastien Lai queried the upside to improved bilateral relations while his father remains imprisoned, stating it felt “somewhat insensitive.”

Authorities' Statements

Conversely, the officials from China applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee said the ruling demonstrated that “the rule of law is upheld.”

An official representing China’s diplomatic corps, Lin Jian, called Lai the “primary instigator” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the prosecution was “justified and legal.” He advised international actors to avoid meddling in China’s internal affairs.

A Representative Verdict

Organizations like Reporters Without Borders have described Lai as a symbol of diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. The organization's director general said it was a “bleak moment for those who care about a free press.”

With a near 100% success rate in prosecuting security-related crimes, Lai’s severe sentence is seen as the toughest yet handed down under the controversial legislation.
