A brave train employee who intervened to save travelers during a multiple stabbing incident on a high-speed train has suffered life-threatening wounds, police stated on Sunday.
CCTV footage allegedly depicts the staff member attempting to halt the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in the county. Bystanders recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers running through carriages.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Authorities declared a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have now been released from hospital.
A witness filmed the suspect brandishing a big knife and being shot with a stun device as he faced officers on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous employee of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by trained officers,” stated a high-ranking law enforcement officer.
Train unions were quick to commend employees and demand increased measures. One union official stated he would be “requesting urgent discussions with government, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the strongest available support, resources and effective procedures in operation”.
A different union representative urged the train operator and government “to move swiftly to review security, to support the impacted employees, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.
The operator who halted the train at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“The driver did not halt the service in the middle of two stops where it’s obviously difficult for the first responders to reach, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,” explained a association official.
Police said they got the first emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer described initially thinking if the event was a holiday prank, but soon realized from people's expressions that it was real.
Authorities have stated there is no evidence to suggest the event was a terrorist incident and have requested the community to come forward with any additional details.
Train operations on the affected line are expected to experience disruption until the following day, with travelers advised to postpone their travel where possible.
