Explosion Costs Three Carabinieri During Eviction Operation in the Verona Area

A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews approached the house close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and a third person who ran away after the blast was located not long after. All three have been taken to the hospital.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official thought the explosion had occurred on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told reporters, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
