The US president arrived in the UK ahead of what marks his repeat state visit, an event labeled as unprecedented in recent political relations.
Trump and his wife Melania landed Tuesday night at Stansted Airport aboard Air Force One. The schedule features events over the next two days, such as being hosted by King Charles, armed forces displays, and a potential aerial demonstration by the Red Arrows alongside British and American F-35 fighter aircraft.
Trump’s arrival has triggered criticism from various quarters in the UK, with the anti-Trump alliance organizing a protest in Windsor on Tuesday and planning a further public gathering in the heart of the capital on Wednesday.
One prominent figure claimed the US president of fueling the flames of divisive, far-right politics around the globe in the past few years.
The same individual stated that Trump’s deployment of the military in US cities and targeting of minorities echoed tactics straight out of the autocrat’s playbook.
He emphasized that while maintaining good relations with the US is pragmatic, the UK must be willing to speak out against a leader who advances divisive policies.
After landing, Donald and Melania Trump were greeted by US protocol officials and a British lord-in-waiting representing the monarch. Yvette Cooper was one of those in attendance to greet the president.
The first couple then entered Marine One, their official aircraft, which departed shortly after their arrival. They were scheduled to proceed to the US ambassador’s residence in Regent’s Park.
At the same time, around 70 demonstrators assembled near Windsor Castle, holding placards and shouting phrases such as “No to Trump” and “he is unwanted in Britain”.
One participant commented, “We need to demonstrate that we do not support what is happening in the world at present.”
A different attendee voiced dismay at the UK leadership’s decision to extend such a lavish welcome, calling it “disgusting” and questioning whether Trump deserved such exceptional treatment.
The royal couple are scheduled to greet the presidential pair with a formal reception at Windsor Castle, including artillery honors fired simultaneously in Windsor and at the Tower of London.
The Ministry of Defence stated that this would be the largest guard of honour ever presented during a state visit, with approximately 1,300 armed forces members and 120 horses participating.
The event will also include a carriage procession toward the castle, joined by the household cavalry, and a military musical performance ceremony—a debut such an act has been staged for a state visit.
An elaborate state banquet includes performances by multiple musical groups, such as the Duchess of Edinburgh’s String Orchestra and bagpipe players from the a historic regiment.
While many protested, a few expressed support for the US president’s visit. One supporter remarked that Trump’s presence could assist in brokering global stability and reinforcing global partnerships.
A Windsor resident admitted that while not protesting, they believed the protests reflected the opinions of the majority in the UK, stating that the state visit seemed designed to placate Trump rather than reflect public sentiment.
Trump is set to travel to the official retreat of the UK prime minister on Thursday, with military aviators positioned along the route upon his arrival.
