AI-generated graphics purporting to portray Nicolás Maduro under arrest following his apprehension by the American authorities have gained many millions of impressions on social media.
Initial fabricated synthetic picture seemingly displaying him being escorted off a aircraft circulated a brief time later. This image was absent from any official US channels; rather, it was uploaded on X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked the SynthID tool, which found the picture was produced or modified with Google AI.
More synthetic visuals started circulating in the following period, appearing to show additional perspectives of Maduro in custody. Discernible logos on these images reveal they originated from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
The detection tool says these additional images were similarly generated or edited AI technology.
Donald Trump posted the initial authentic image of Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite the authentic image was made public, AI-generated images kept circulating but were altered to show the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.
Reverse image searches reveal these altered fabrications were first posted on TikTok by a graphic design account. Again, the AI-watermark detector found the new graphics were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.
