At least 64 Killed in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime

A minimum of 64 civilians were killed in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 people were detained.

Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with shooting, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

Government representatives confirmed at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Locals have compared the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed across the area.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the mission, along with numerous weapons.

Mission Context

The joint operation by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.
