A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story

Throughout this animated adventure for preteens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving gold under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for children). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people together. Both groups portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet each holds biased views about the other. The fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they make for quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find all that many children’s animations aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
