2026 Declared the Age of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this rise, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the trend in gaming appears uniquely strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs offer inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year so far.

Should these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
